How To Prevent COVID-19 From Devastating Your Career Goals

Are you worried your job in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis? You are not alone. To date, there has been a record-breaking 3.3M unemployment claims filed, with more expected to be on the way. As I discussed last week on my Facebook Live, one of the most important things now (besides social distancing, hand washing, and staying healthy!) is to keep your fear in check. However, once you’ve done that what happens next?

Aside from the strategic things that need to be done, this process is about creating a bullet-proof mindset to fight off the negativity. You will hear plenty of people say that there are not any job openings, no one is hiring, or that you won’t find anything then you need to think twice. There are plenty of companies hiring now! And if you don’t see one that you want right now, then it is still the perfect time to get yourself ready and take active steps. Waiting until the economy “is better” or this is over could be too late because you could be getting yourself in front of recruiters right now.

What is stopping you from taking action?

So, if you have been impacted by this pandemic and have been laid off, have you filed for your unemployment benefits yet? I know many states have been backed up and their online systems have been going down….but be sure to get this done so you can keep moving forward!

Next, love on yourself. Remember, this isn’t and wasn’t your fault and you are not alone. Forgive yourself on do take a little bit of time to decompress and allow yourself to feel something. The key is not to get stuck here!

Next, it is about getting into action. What kind of job are you searching for? Are you staying in the same industry or will you be seeking a career in a new one? Decide what it is that you want to do.

Stay in action. Some of you may not have searched for a job in a long time, some of you may have. It doesn’t matter because either way you need to be sure you have all your necessary documents and profiles updated. This is crucial because using anything outdated will lead to lost opportunities.

Now you are in an active job search- be sure to consider what I discussed last week, which was not letting your fear win. Once that happens it will become very easy to self-sabotage your job search and your career. Take care of your mindset and your health.

It is also important to remember the differences between furloughs and layoffs:
• A layoff is permanent job loss
• A furlough is temporary, typically an unknown amount of time, without pay and benefits
• In both cases, you are likely eligible for unemployment benefits but with a furlough you are still employed and do not have to prove to your state’s department of labor that you are actively seeking work because you are still employed
• An important point to consider is that if you are furloughed for a long period of time and have no idea if or when you will be going back to work, start an active job search to avoid further financial and career distress.

The time is NOW to take action and get yourself prepared and searching!

Remember:

Our normal won’t be the same. The job market will also take time to make a full recovery. That doesn’t mean that you have to wait! It requires you to be coachable enough to consider the possibilities, resourceful enough to find them, and committed enough to see your job search and goals through!

Is Fear Controlling Your Job Search? How To Stop It Now!

I think that we can all agree that we are living in some crazy, scary times right now. We may not be sure when our #QuarantineLife will be over, but what we can be sure of is how we respond to it.

I am aware of the uneasiness, anxiety, and stress many of you are feeling right now when it comes to how this crisis is going to affect your jobs and your careers. However, fear itself can be like a virus It is contagious. You may hear people talking about being infected by fear – yes, we can sense it, we can feel it, and smell it according to some studies.

It is important to remember that fear is a survival mechanism and while it is okay to feel fear- it is not okay to let fear be the driver and to be what motivates you, your decisions, and dictates your emotional state.

It might feel good and like you are making the right decision to do the safe thing and stay inside your comfort zone. However, that is oftentimes counterproductive and can harm you from reaching your goals. By allowing fear to be in control, it will rob you of your joy, steal your gratitude, happiness, and inner peace. It will ruin your mood and suck you into constant negativity.

That doesn’t make it any easier to find a new role, does it? (You know the answer!)

By allowing fear to win, it will also rob you of your ability to make good, judicious decisions because you will be unable to focus.

Not to mention that your immune system functions better without fear! Fear puts your body into overdrive by causing stress, anxiety, and panic.

I cannot deny that we are living in constantly changing times but what IS important is how you choose to respond to what is happening. Laid off? Were you already looking for a new role amid the COVID-19 crisis and now you’re worried you’ll never find anything? Test your own mindset and beliefs. The demand for healthcare, online learning companies, remote and online meeting/ communications companies, and e-commerce are just a few industries who are actively hiring. There is no shame in changing industries and pivoting your career, if needed. This is an excellent time to do so…why wait?

Instead of being wrapped in fear while being at home, take this time to consider what will bring you joy in your career instead. Think about your skills and your strengths and how those could apply to a potential role. How would you like to contribute to society? What problems would you like to solve? What would make you proud at the end of the day?

Please also remember that challenges are a part of life. They help us grow as a person and grow in our careers. If the markets crash, they will eventually recover. As will you! My advice is that the time is now- move away from fear, get centered with your purpose, and begin by taking active steps today to get started. Are You Happy in Your Career?

Are you happy in your current role? When is the last time you checked in with yourself and asked yourself that question? And if you’re not…what’s keeping you from looking and landing a new role? According to The State of the American Job Report by Pew Research, 2016 , job satisfaction rates for American workers are as follows:

  • Very Satisfied – 49%
  • Somewhat Satisfied – 30%
  • Dissatisfied – 9%
  • Very Dissatisfied – 6%

Half of all Americans are dissatisfied with their current roles. And there is also a strong correlation between how one feels about their role and how one feels about their life. Typically, when one feels happy and satisfied with their work and working conditions then it translates to their life outside of the workplace.

According to the data above, only 30 percent are somewhat satisfied, which means that those feelings of dissatisfaction are going to translate into other areas of their life, such as marriage and relationships, children, family, friendship, health, finances, and more.

I have seen those unhappy in their careers feeling miserable in their lives overall and on the brink of health crises, bankruptcy, divorce, and depression just to name a few major challenges.

Unfortunately, it’s the painful truth.

We take for granted how bad it can be truly be and what’s missing in one’s career. Employers need to heed the call to give their employees what they want and need to retain them. Most of the jobseekers I speak to are seeking development, training, growth, flexibility, more challenging work, advancement, and salary increases. These are small prices to pay for being a loyal, consistent, and dedicated employee who shows daily to solve workplace challenges and bring your A-game so your employer gets the best of your talents and skills.

So, if we are so unhappy and dissatisfied with our careers then why aren’t we job searching? You would think it would be best to find a new role while still employed- especially if you didn’t enjoy your current one.

The data for January 2020 indicates that the average duration of unemployment was 21.9 weeks. Jobseekers will also spend an average of 11 hours a week to search for a new role.

If you either dislike your current role or are in need of new one, can you honestly tell yourself that you are content living a mediocre life and having a mediocre career? Achieving something big in your life and your career requires a drastic change to make it happen and to actually make it work.

So…

You are too stressed out for it to remain this way.
You are losing sleep.
Your health is being affected.
You hate your job.
You hate being unemployed or underemployed.
You KNOW that you are meant to do more in your life.
You have ambitions of finding your dream career and fulfilling your purpose.
You are underpaid and aspire of receiving a salary increase and no longer needing to worry.
You have been searching without receiving any results.

What I have found that works is having a game plan that works to get you the results that you are looking for. Some make the mistake thinking that they need more information, which just gets them lost and overwhelms them- keeping you from actually achieving your goals and your success. What is necessary is a tried and true plan that consistently brings results.

What are the Benefits of Gratitude?

I love gratitude.

This time of the year is the best time to learn how to express it.

The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness. Gratitude is an appreciation for what an individual receives, whether it is tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the good in their lives. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

People feel and express gratitude in multiple ways. They can apply it to the past by claiming positive memories and being thankful for elements of their childhood or past blessings, the present by not taking good fortune for granted as it comes, and the future by maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude. Regardless of the inherent or current level of someone’s gratitude, it’s a quality that individuals can successfully cultivate further.

So, how can gratitude change your mindset? Let’s take a closer look.

 A Gratitude Journal

Gratitude journals have been known to help the reverse the cycle of negative thinking. The best way to do it is by just getting started and not overthinking how or a by employing a specific process. Make it a habit to write down thoughts about things in your life each day. Allow yourself just to write and not to overanalyze. A gratitude journal is a great way to think about what you’re grateful for in your life each day. What makes your life so amazing? What makes you feel blessed and happy? Think about those things and write about them!

There are some incredible benefits to keeping a gratitude journal, such as:

  • Feeling calmer at night
  • Decreased levels of stress
  • Gaining a new perspective of what is important to you and what you appreciate in your life
  • By clarifying your thoughts on what you want to have more of in your life, and what you can remove from your life.
  • Helps you focus on what really matters.
  • Help you become more self-aware
  • Read back through your gratitude journal to readjust your attitude and remember all of the wonderful things and people that you have in your life

It is important to plan to maintain your journal on a consistent basis in order to continually capture all of the benefits. I love to write in mine each morning with a cup of coffee before I start my day. Some prefer to do it before bed because then they can capture their day. There isn’t a right or a wrong; it’s about just doing it!

Giving Thanks Year-Round

Gratitude also has been known to improve health when it is expressed regularly. According to UCLA’s Mindfulness Awareness Research Center, expressing gratitude regularly literally changes the molecular structure of the brain, it keeps the gray matter functioning, and makes individuals healthier and happier. To consistently reap these health- and other- benefits we want to do this year-round. So, what else can gratitude do for us and our lives?

  • Gratitude opens the door to more- or improved- relationships
  • Gratitude improves physical health
  • Gratitude improves emotional well-being
  • Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression
  • Grateful people sleep better
  • Gratitude improves self-esteem
  • Gratitude increases mental strength

I have found that improving these things have also helped to improve other areas of life such as one’s career and job search and decisions related to those because it has improved the clarity and the power in which those decisions are made.

Hey ladies, have you ever been stuck in a job search that isn’t going anywhere? It’s frustrating, annoying, and makes you wonder what you’re doing wrong, right? So, you just start to second guess yourself?

Are ATS Keeping You On The Sidelines?

Many jobseekers are unaware of what an ATS is or how it affects them or even their results.

I have seen jobseekers spend months to even years sending out resumes and not getting a response or only receiving rejections. And typically, when this happens, they assume that there is something wrong with them, their skills, or that they weren’t qualified for the job.

However, where is the proof that any of this true??

You weren’t provided any feedback so you’re going by only what you THINK is true- not what ACTUALLY is.

How many rejections does it take to realize that the problem isn’t you- it’s the fact that resume writing has gotten more complicated, complex, and difficult? Would it take 100 rejections or 10 years’ worth? What would life be like then? Can you imagine the hell of that constant writing and editing hoping that you got it right only to come up short again? Can you imagine how desperate you would feel? Think about bringing that desperation to a job search. It will only result in a negative impact and not the results that you were seeking.

What many may not realize is that jobseekers battle with feeling inadequate or desperate regularly.

What they also do not realize is that it can be avoided altogether.

Those feelings of inadequacy, frustration, and aggravation can go away.

They can be replaced with feelings of happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment.

The question is are you ready to do so?

This requires giving up things that don’t work and trying things that do.

It also requires building new beliefs about what is possible.

If this sounds like you and if you are serious about your job search and your career, then let’s talk!

This is NOT for everyone. If you are READY to stop struggling & finally LAND your dream career & earn the salary you’ve been longing for, then click the link below to get started by booking your strategy session TODAY! Limited slots available- book now before they are filled!
