Most people associate doing more work with earning more money. ?
There’s a problem with this thinking.
How would it ever be possible to earn a raise?
Work 24-hours a day? 7 days a week?
Would doing one more project or working extra hours automatically earn us salary increases?
Why do we believe that we need to do more, for the same or less? If you’re already doing additional work (something beyond the scope of your current role)- shouldn’t you being getting paid appropriately for it? This flawed thinking only makes the problem worse because it forces women to struggle asserting their true value because they’re not being compensated properly for their work to begin with.
What many may not realize is that compensation is not based on the AMOUNT of work you do. It’s based on your ABILITY and SKILLS to do that work effectively and to solve organizational issues in your role. So, when we begin to work outside of the scope of our current role and build new skills and abilities to solve new problems, we should be paid appropriately for it.
This flawed thinking is only making the problem worse for job seekers and career changers.
It means that if we get paid according to the amount of work that we do, then we can’t ever make more money because most working women are already stretched thin enough.
Time away from home. ?
Time away from our spouses/ partners.
Time away from children.
